Emile Ganest was born in Hamburg, Germany on May 11th, 1894. He studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg and at the University of Zurich. He had an internship at the hospital in Biel, Switzerland under the direction of Dr. Carl Schneider
He continued his studies at the University of Vienna, where he had an appointment as assistant to Professor Hans Berger. He received his medical doctorate in 1914 on the topic of "Ruptured Cerebral Aneurysms." In 1917 he was appointed professor of neuropathology at the University Hospital Zurich. In 1926 he was appointed director of research at the psychiatric clinic in Zurich.
In 1927 he started his own private practice where he treated patients with psychoneuroses. Dr. Ganest concentrated on psychological conditions due to organic brain diseases, including depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy.
